WORKSHOP on Digital Oral History Content Management

NEP4DISSENT cordially invites participants for the workshop:

Solving the Shoebox Syndrome: “Digital” Oral History Content Management

12 June 2020 at 14:00 CET, via Zoom.

by Douglas Lambert, C2DH, University of Luxembourg.

This workshop centers on digital methods for working with oral history and provides a survey of emerging practices relevant to anyone running an oral history project, large or small, whether for research purposes, for posterity, or both. Dr. Douglas Lambert (C2DH) will share his experience in audio/video content management, developed through an oral history consulting practice in the US (with historian Michal Frisch) and in his current post-doctoral research at the University of Luxembourg. The workshop emphasizes techniques in “oral history digital indexing” (OHDI) that use direct-to-media timecode capabilities to get stagnant oral history collections “out of the shoebox” and into a usable environment.  Systems used for OHDI work include OHMS (the Oral History Metadata Synchronizer) and allow oral histories to be shared online as curated, interlinked, multimedia collections. Indexing systems also can be invaluable to researchers, for creating meaningful access to long a/v files without necessarily needing a word-for-word transcription.

Participants will join a conversation via Zoom that will include a combination of demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and discussions around this still-emerging body of activities.  Demonstrations will include oral history websites and project workflows that illustrate OHDI. Participants will share their own projects’ features and digital ambitions.  Hands-on exercises will allow participants to gain a better understanding of indexing techniques–essential experience for both project managers and qualitative researchers doing oral history in the digital age. Discussions will include the challenges and opportunities participants face in their projects, and what does or does not change in the context of digital methods. Additional discussion topics may include using coding in research projects, the importance of depositing/preserving material, and digital oral history uses in Pedagogy.

If you want to participate, please register here by Friday, 29 May 2020.

This workshop has capacity of max. 12 participants. In case of high demand, the organizers reserve the right to selection. Registrants will be notified by 3 June 2020.

The workshop will take place on 12 June 2020 at 14:00 CET, via Zoom. It will take about 2 hours with possibility of staying “after class.”
