Mari Laanemets is an art historian and is currently Senior Researcher at the Estonian Academy of Arts (Institute of Art History and Visual Culture). She studied art history at the Estonian Academy of Arts and earned her Ph.D. at the Institute of Art History at the Humboldt University of Berlin (with a work "Zwischen westlicher Moderne und sowjetischer Avantgarde: Inoffizielle Kunst in Estland 1969–1978", published in 2011 by Gebrüder Mann Verlag). She has published several articles and essays (on such artists as Leonhard Lapin, Mladen Stilinović, Sirje Runge) and has co-edited the books "Environment, Projects, Concepts: Architects of the Tallinn School 1972–1985", "Mladen Stilinović. On Money and Zeros". She has curated exhibitions and film programmes, latest the exhibition “Our Metamorphic Futures: Design, Technical Aesthetics and Experimental Architecture in the Soviet Union 1960–1980” (2011–2012, together with Andres Kurg) and "Abstraction as Open Experiment" (2018) . Currently, she is working on a book of the work of Sirje Runge, Dóra Maurer and Zofia Kulik.
